Each year, hundreds of the top pitmasters from around the world attend the American Royal World Series of Barbecue in Kansas City, Kansas. Hundreds of BBQ teams compete for a chance to win $15,000 and the grand champion trophy. The event features three days of activities at the enormous Kansas Speedway, including private parties, fundraisers, and public-facing events for BBQ fans and their families. The weekend is closed out with the huge American Royal Open competition, where any team can take part.
In this episode of Smoke Point from Eater, you’ll meet acclaimed pitmaster Phil "The Grill" Johnson from Phoenix, Arizona, who is competing for the fifth year in a row. Meanwhile, Jim and Katie Osborn, the winners of Australia’s barbecue championship, have traveled all the way from the land down under to compete in the world's biggest barbecue contest.
