—With the NFL Draft being in Kansas City this weekend, KSHB held its own KC BBQ Draft to rate 17 joints.—

Kansas City is hosting the NFL Draft this weekend. This event is enormous, and lots of out-of-towners will be in the city for it, likely grabbing some barbecue. Appropriately, some of the staff at KSHB 41 News got together to create their own “KC BBQ Draft.” The crew tried meats and sides from 17 joints, which include a mix of new and old school, and then rated them with draft picks. Top picks among the crew included Meat Mitch BBQ, Chef J BBQ, Joe’s Kansas City, Harp Barbecue, and Q39. Speaking of the NFL Draft in Kansas City, one awesome event happening this weekend is the “Kansas City Smoke Show.” This showcase starts at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, April 29, at the NFL Draft Experience. Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz will host the show, and it will feature some of the biggest names in Kansas City barbecue, including Joe’s KC, Gates BBQ, Arthur Bryant’s, and Slap’s BBQ. Texas Monthly has announced that it will bring its huge TM BBQ Fest back to Lockhart during the first weekend of November. The historical downtown (known historically for its barbecue) will “create the backdrop for the second annual BBQ World’s Fair on Saturday, November 4, and the Top 50 Picnic will return to Lockhart City Park on Sunday, November 5.” Early bird tickets for on sale on June 1. Bludso’s BBQ, one of Los Angeles’ best-known BBQ joints, will soon be expanding with a new location in Santa Monica. The menu will be similar to its popular La Brea location. However, Eater LA reports that “there will be some Santa Monica-only exclusive items available once the new restaurant is up and running. That includes smoked turkey breast and a smoked bone-in ribeye for folks who aren’t afraid to go big at dinner. The new location will also offer a similar beer and wine list and will have a full bar to boot.” READ MORE.

Recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious barbecue contests, the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is a four-day competition held in Memphis. Teams representing the best of barbecue that have been honing their craft for years compete for the title of World Champion and a share of the more than $145,000 in prize money. The event will be held again at Tom’s River Park after a hiatus. However, based on the reduction in space in the new Tom Lee Park the event organizers expect the contest will be limited to 150 teams.
