The future of the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is in jeopardy over lease terms at Tom Lee Park, the organization reports. Memphis in May International Festival held its Annual Meeting last week, where results from the 2022 festival were released along with an economic impact study of Memphis in May events. Because of ongoing renovations at Tom Lee Park, the contest was held at the Fairgrounds in Liberty Park. Attendance at the event was down dramatically this year because of the displacement from the traditional riverfront home. The organization reported a record-setting financial loss of $2.23 million from the 2022 festival operations, surpassing even the previous record loss when the festival was forced to completely cancel due to COVID.
